Colorado Buffaloes head coach Deion Sanders still wants to add more NFL experience to his coaching staff.
At Big 12 Media Day on Thursday, Sanders voiced his desire to add former NFL quarterback and Tampa Bay Buccaneers offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich to his staff. He also said he is hoping to bring back Mike Zimmer, who has stated his intent to retire.
“Our coaching staff, this is without Byron Leftwich, which I’m praying that he does the right thing, and Mike Zimmer, we have 160 years of NFL experience,” Sanders said, via Michael David Smith of Pro Football Talk. “With those two added, that’s 204 years of NFL experience. And I want those years.”
It was reported in March that Leftwich had agreed to join Sanders’ staff, but evidently it is not a done deal yet. Zimmer worked with Sanders at Colorado in 2023 before taking the Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator job last season, but Sanders has to talk him out of retirement in order to bring him back to Boulder.
Sanders has always prioritized adding big names with NFL experience to his staff. Even if he fails to land Leftwich or Zimmer, he has brought in a new name to that effect for the 2025 season.
