Florida State offers scholarship to 14-year-old eighth grader Tru Thompson

How early is too early to offer a scholarship in the world of college football? Apparently “fresh out of middle school” and 14 years old is not too early for some programs.

Florida State offered a scholarship to 14-year-old DT Tru Thompson Friday at the end of the Jimbo Fisher Football Camp. Thompson will be entering high school in the fall and would not step onto the FSU campus until 2019, but there were plenty of indications for Fisher that the kid would develop.

Let’s start with Thompson’s measurements: he is a six-footer, weighs 300 pounds and has size 18 feet. He runs a 5.1 40-yard dash, benches 300 pounds, and squats 512 according to Warchant.com.

“Coach Fisher offered me a scholarship today and I’m thinking about it right now. I was like ‘me, he’s offering me.’ It was very exciting. This is my first ever coming to a college camp,” Thompson told Warchant.com. “Coach Fisher also talked about how athletic I was during the camp. It’s a great school and a lot of success came out of here so I’ve always like them. I know Odell Haggins is also a great coach and one of the best defensive line coaches. Also, I want to major in business and they have a good program. So when I heard about that I said ‘alright that’s pretty good.'”

Thompson confirmed the offer with a tweet sent Friday:
