Joey Galloway jokes ESPN would ‘shut down’ if SEC team not in football playoff

The notion that ESPN has an SEC bias is certainly nothing new and it certainly wasn’t helped by the world wide leader’s ownership in the SEC Network, which launched last August.

During an episode of ESPN’s “College Gameday” last year, Chris Fowler went on a bit of a rant, blasting those who claim the playoff selection committee or the network want multiple SEC teams in the playoff. On Thursday former NFL wide receiver, and now analyst for ESPN, Joey Galloway joked the network would be in real trouble if no SEC teams were in the new FBS playoff.

Towards the end of the above video, from the network’s coverage at SEC Media Days, Galloway said with a smile, “Like I said, ESPN would shut down if an SEC team doesn’t get in the playoff. That’s it, we’ll be looking for somewhere else to work.”

Not surprisingly, the remark got a laugh from Joe Tessitore and Paul Finebaum. And while the comment was made in jest, it does sum up how many people feel when it comes to ESPN and the SEC. It just so happens Galloway said it on national televsision.

Galloway started with ESPN as a commentator during games. However, earlier this summer, it was announced he would join Adnan Virk and Danny Kanell on the “College Football Final” postgame show as Rece Davis will now be on “College Gameday”, Lou Holtz retired, and Mark May will have other responsibilities.
