Texas Longhorns coach Steve Sarkisian sounded like he was making excuses following his team’s 29-21 loss to Florida on Saturday.
The Longhorns dropped to 3-2 following Saturday’s loss to the Gators at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville, Fla. It was also the latest loss in a trend for Sarkisian, who is now 2-8 against top-10 opponents at Texas.
Sarkisian was in a defensive mood when asked about that record, however, pointing to the fact that the Longhorns’ two losses this year have come at Ohio State and Florida.
“I mean, how many teams are there in college football? 136? Take the other 135 and have them go play at Ohio State and at The Swamp, see how they do,” Sarkisian said Monday, via Anwar Richardson of Orangebloods.
It is worth noting that the Gators are 2-3 this season and lost a home game to South Florida a month ago. The Swamp was not too much for at least one team to deal with.
Texas’ season is simply not going as Sarkisian likely expected it to. Quarterback Arch Manning has been nowhere near as good as many expected him to be, and Texas has yet to beat any quality opposition. Their next chance will be next week when they host the No. 6 Oklahoma Sooners. Considering the importance of that rivalry game, Longhorns fans are unlikely to accept any excuses from Sarkisian if Texas does not win it.
