49ers get rough updates on George Kittle, Brock Purdy

The injury bug did not waste any time biting the San Francisco 49ers.

There’s a real possibility that the Niners will be without both quarterback Brock Purdy and tight end George Kittle for their Week 2 contest against the New Orleans Saints. The two Pro Bowler players got hurt in San Francisco’s season-opening win over the Seattle Seahawks.

Kittle’s injury is more severe. The All-Pro tight end is expected to miss “a few weeks” to deal with a hamstring injury that ended his outing early during Sunday’s contest. Kittle caught four passes and scored a touchdown on the 49ers’ opening drive. But he came up limping and headed for the medical tent after running a deep route with about 10 minutes left in the second quarter. He did not return.

Purdy’s name was the more surprising addition on the injury report ahead of the 49ers’ Week 2 clash. He orchestrated San Francisco’s game-winning drive on Sunday, capped off by a touchdown pass to Kittle’s replacement, Jake Tonges.

But 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan shared Monday that Purdy has been dealing with shoulder and toe injuries. Shanahan added that Purdy’s status for Week 2 remains up in the air.

“We’ve got to see how it heals and how the week goes on it,” said Shanahan, via ESPN’s Nick Wagoner.

Purdy was inconsistent throughout Sunday’s win. He went 26/35 for 277 yards and 2 touchdowns. But he also gave up two ugly interceptions that had fans criticizing Purdy for trying to justify the new $265 million contract he signed in the offseason.
