Jerry Jones: Dak Prescott’s play allows Cowboys to be patient with Tony Romo

When Tony Romo went down with a broken collarbone last year, the Dallas Cowboys were finished. Now that they have Dak Prescott playing like a seasoned veteran, the same is not true of the 2016 Cowboys.

According to Jerry Jones, Prescott’s play through the first three games has given Dallas the luxury of not having to rush Romo back.

“And so those wins will give you a little more conservative time frame if you looked at Tony’s condition,” Jones said, via Clarence Hill of the Star-Telegram. “Under no circumstances would he go out there if there was risk. Let’s get that real straight. But as far as the ability to give him more time, medicine wants more time, and they’ll tell you, well, he’ll be better off two months from now than he is today. Medicine says that and we all accept it.

“But I think the fact that (Prescott is) playing well, and if playing well gives us a chance to have another win that we wouldn’t have had if he wouldn’t have played well, all of that would enter into the decision.”

That was a very roundabout way of saying the Cowboys are not in a big hurry to get Romo back, and why should they be? Prescott has the team off to a 2-1 start and has not turned the ball over in three games. Heck, his two wins are already more than the Cowboys won all of last season when Romo sat out.

“I think we’re different than we were last year,” Jones said. “But the two guys that were pump-fisted in the training room a minute ago was me and Romo, be because we’re getting some wins in that win column, so when he gets back we won’t be looking uphill at it as much as we experienced last year.”

Despite a report we heard before the season, the Cowboys sound committed to Romo even if Prescott continues to win. At the very least, they have themselves what looks like a top-notch insurance policy.
