The New York Jets are staying within the division for their next head coach. They are hiring former Dolphins head coach Adam Gase, according to multiple reports.
Gase went 23-25 over three seasons in Miami. His teams were 5-1 against the Jets, which likely caught the attention of New York’s brass.
Though Gase’s under .500 record in Miami does not jump off the page, if you look beyond just the record and realize he was nearly .500 despite Ryan Tannehill missing 24 games during that span, it’s more impressive. He was able to win games even with Matt Moore, Brock Osweiler, and Jay Cutler under center over the past three seasons.
Gase has a strong offensive background, and the Jets feel he is the right man to take over the franchise and lead in Sam Darnold’s development.
The hiring of Gase explains why Matt Rhule is returning to Baylor. It also leaves Mike McCarthy in a bad spot, as he was supposedly focusing on the Jets position.
The only remaining head coaching vacancies now are Miami and Cincinnati.
