Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow made his first public comments Friday since undergoing surgery on his left toe, and it will not necessarily lift anyone’s spirits.
Burrow shared a set of photos of himself to Instagram one week after undergoing a procedure that threatens to keep him out for the rest of the season. His caption was a simple one, albeit rather heartbreaking.
“This game will break your heart. See you soon,” Burrow wrote.
The message does, at least, end on a somewhat optimistic note. Burrow clearly hopes to play again this season, although even the most optimistic timeline keeps him out until late December at the earliest. For that to happen, the Bengals will probably have to find a way to remain in playoff contention without him.
The Bengals are 2-1, so there is at least a chance they will be able to stay afloat with backup Jake Browning under center. However, they are fresh off a discouraging blowout loss to the Minnesota Vikings.
Burrow is, unfortunately, no stranger to significant injuries. He suffered an ACL tear in 2020 as a rookie, and suffered a season-ending wrist injury ten games into 2023. With that sort of history, it is no wonder everyone had the same thought when Burrow went down this time.
