Flag football will become an official Olympic sport at the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and there is a chance NFL players will be given the green light to participate.

The NFL announced on Thursday that team owners will vote next week on a proposal that would allow players to compete in flag football at the Olympics.

The proposal calls for one active player from each team to be permitted to participate in Olympic flag football. An additional player who is designated as a team’s international player would also be able to try out for his respective country’s team.

Other aspects of the proposal pertain to injury protection, salary cap credit and field surface standards. You can see the full proposal:

At least one Pro Bowl player has expressed interest in participating in flag football at the 2028 Olympics. The risks for doing so would be obvious, but NFL players have tried to compete at the Olympics in other ways in the past.

If the proposal is approved, it will be interesting to see if teams are inclined to allow their star players to participate.
