The Green Bay Packers are searching far and wide for their next head coach, including in some unlikely places.
According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the Packers have requested an interview with Northwestern head coach Pat Fitzgerald following the Wildcats’ appearance in the Holiday Bowl on Monday.
Fitzgerald was originally hired by Packers president Mark Murphy when the latter was Northwestern’s athletic director in 2006, and the two are known to be close. It is unclear, however, whether Fitzgerald would actually be interested in leaving Northwestern for the NFL.
Fitzgerald is arguably the most successful coach in Northwestern history with a 95-70 record to his name, and Murphy is clearly a big believer in his abilities, even if he’s completely unproven at the NFL level. Green Bay has interviewed some more experienced ex-NFL coaches for the role, but they’re clearly casting a wide net.
