Report: Patriots preparing Julian Edelman to be backup QB
The New England Patriots may have only one healthy quarterback on their roster when they take on the Houston Texans, but it doesn’t sound like they plan to sign a veteran. If Jimmy Garoppolo is unable to go on Thursday night, who will be the emergency option behind rookie Jacoby Brissett?
Julian Edelman, perhaps.
According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Media, the Patriots have done “extensive preparation” this week to prepare Edelman to serve as the No. 2 backup against Houston.
The #Patriots have done extensive preparation over the past few days to get WR Julian Edelman ready as the backup QB. It may actually happen

Edelman was a quarterback in college at Kent State, and he threw a touchdown pass in a playoff win over the Baltimore Ravens two seasons ago. The Patriots have a complicated offense, and there have been reports that Bill Belichick simply doesn’t think he could get a veteran backup up to speed in a few days time.
The Patriots have not yet ruled out Garoppolo, who suffered a shoulder injury against the Miami Dolphins. In fact, they are reportedly laying it on thick in an attempt to get him to play hurt. Should Garoppolo sit out and Brissett suffer an injury of his own, we just might see Edelman under center in New England.
