Peyton Manning calls Indianapolis reporters to say thanks

Peyton Manning sure knows how to work the media. Manning, who has been described as a classy athlete and model superstar, did something you hardly hear about: He called reporters who used to cover him on a daily basis to thank them.

Phillip B. Wilson of the Indianapolis Star says he received a call from Manning on Thursday and he wrote about the experience:

Anyway, Manning said thanks for my work over the years. Classy. He said everything had happened so fast, but he wanted to call the local writers and express his appreciation for what we had done while he was in Indy.

[…]

Manning is the most clever athlete in handling the media. And while his critics will suggest this was just a PR move, it doesn’t really matter.

I really can’t say anything bad about what Manning did. Even if his actions were motivated by a desire to have the media treat him well, he still went out of his way to call writers personally to thank them. Just taking the time to do that makes it authentic, and he did it without knowing whether the calls would become public knowledge.

Classy fella, that Peyton Manning.
