Reggie Bush cut by Lions

Reggie-BushThe Detroit Lions have released running back Reggie Bush, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Bush, a former Heisman Trophy winner, spent the last two seasons with the Lions after spending two with the Miami Dolphins and the first five of his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints. The 29-year-old has struggled to remain healthy in Detroit, missing five games last season and two in 2013.

Even when he played last year, Bush was largely ineffective. He dealt with a number of lower-body injuries that clearly plagued him throughout most of the season. After rushing for over 1,000 yards for just the second time in his career in 2013, Bush racked up just 297 yards on the ground and 590 total yards from scrimmage in 2014.

Bush also saw his name come up in the Darren Sharper rape case earlier this month.

By releasing Bush, the Lions will save $1.7 million against the salary cap in 2015. While that could indicate that they are happy with what they have in their backfield in Joique Bell and Theo Riddick, Detroit could be looking to find some extra cash to bring back Ndamukong Suh, who is arguably the best free agent set to hit the open market.
