Reporter believes Jets will draft either Mitch Trubisky, Deshaun Watson

DeShaun Watson

The New York Jets have the No. 6 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft, and they are in seemingly desperate need of a quarterback. One reporter envisions them addressing that need.

Darryl Slater of NJ Advance Media believes the Jets are going to use their first-round pick on either Mitch Trubisky or Deshaun Watson. Some think that is unlikely since New York just used a second-round pick on Christian Hackenberg a year ago, but Slater does not believe that will deter the team.

Yes, we know the Jets have many other needs. Yes, we know they just drafted quarterback Christian Hackenberg in Round 2 last year. Yes, we know Mitch Trubisky and Deshaun Watson are not considered sure-thing future franchise quarterbacks. But we still think the Jets will like enough of what they see in either Trubisky or Watson to draft one of those guys at No. 6 overall — and start over (once again) at quarterback.

Trubisky is considered by many to be the best QB in the draft class, and there have been reports dating back to last season that the Jets are extremely high on him. Watson seems like more of a stretch in the top 10, but he certainly boosted his stock with his gutsy performance in a comeback win over Alabama in the National Championship Game.

All that said, this year’s draft is loaded with talent outside the QB position. The Jets might be better off using their No. 6 pick on a more talented overall player and sticking with the veteran they just signed for a season. Let’s face it, New York is not making the playoffs. No one would blame the team for looking ahead to 2018.
