Rory McIlroy breaks up with Caroline Wozniacki, calls off engagement

Rory McIlroy Caroline WozniackiRory McIlroy and Caroline Wozniacki are not getting married, after all. In a shocking turn of events, McIlroy announced on Wednesday morning that he has called off the wedding and is ending his relationship with the tennis star. This time, word of the breakup came straight from the horse’s mouth.

“The problem is mine. The wedding invitations issued at the weekend made me realize that I wasn’t ready for all that marriage entails,” McIlroy said in a statement, via the NY Daily News. “I wish Caroline all the happiness she deserves and thank her for the great times we’ve had. I will not be saying anything more about our relationship in any setting.”

Wozniacki and McIlroy sent out their invitations just days ago, and the two-time major champion poked fun at a report last week that got the couple’s wedding date incorrect. McIlroy spoke a bit more about his personal life a few hours after making the announcement.

“It is quite a difficult time for Caroline and myself, and the statement really said it all this morning,” he added. “It was mutual and we both thought it was the best for us, the best for both of us. Time to move on, and I’ve said all that I need to say.

“Look, I’m no different than anyone else. Everyone has been through breakups, and it’s obviously very, very difficult. But look, I’m here to try and concentrate on this week and answer questions about golf, and that’s what I’m going to do.”

Wozniacki and McIlroy had grown used to false rumors about their relationship ending, and they seemed to laugh it off every time. He said earlier this year that Wozniacki is the “right girl for me,” despite analysts and former golfers constantly blaming his dating life for his struggles.

We certainly didn’t see this coming.
