The ESPN 30 for 30 documentary series has been highly intriguing and easily some of the best programming the network has ever televised. Almost as good as the documentaries themselves are the commercials they run to promote each film. In those promos, a man with a deep yet soothing voice perfect for storytelling begins a line of questions prefaced with the phrase “What if I told you?” There is an intense piano under the voice, and the combination of the writing and music gives the story a tragic feel.
Well apparently their promos were so darn good other companies have taken notice.
As Awful Announcing discovered and so perfectly expressed on their site, weight loss company Jenny Craig is using spokeswoman Carrie Fisher for a campaign that bears a similar tone and identical music. Check it out:
That’s too similar to be a coincidence. Maybe they figured us testosterone-seething sports addicts would never venture far enough out of our arena to come across such a commercial. They were wrong.
