Jerry Jones says he fuels QB controversy on purpose

Jerry Jones

Jerry Jones’ specialty as an owner is generating buzz and interest surrounding his football team. He’s great at that, and that’s a big reason why he’s developed the Dallas Cowboys into one of the most valuable sports franchises in the world.

He even acknowledged that he feeds the quarterback controversy on the team because it creates a dramatic storyline, even if it may distract some of the players.

“That’s one of the things that makes sports interesting,” Jones told the Wall Street Journal’s Jason Gay. “I do feed that.”

The Cowboys owner continues to talk about the possibility of Tony Romo playing for the Cowboys and replacing Dak Prescott. It’s believed that Jones talks about that in order to make Romo feel like he is part of the team despite the team continuing to win without him.

Jones’ most recent comments were that Romo could replace Prescott if the rookie started playing so poorly that it was evident the team needed to make a change.

Jones is basically crafting a storyline that would generate huge ratings if Romo were to return to the job and lead the Cowboys to the Super Bowl. But if Prescott keeps it rolling, Jones will probably flip the script and get completely behind Prescott and come up with a good storyline there to create more exposure.

From doing things like signing Terrell Owens to drafting Dez Bryant, Jerry always is looking to keep his Cowboys in the spotlight. That’s why he was so close to drafting Johnny Manziel and had to be restrained from doing so. And now that his team has been smooth sailing with nothing but wins and very little controversy, Jones is stretching just to come up with ways to generate extra buzz, even if it’s not great for his young quarterback’s psyche.
