Terrell Owens to Titus Young: Know your role

When it comes to wearing out your welcome with an NFL team, Terrell Owens is an expert. No one would ever confuse T.O. with a quiet player who minds his own business. It’s often been said that those who can’t do should instead teach, which is why it makes sense on some level that Owens recently had a bit of advice for Detroit Lions receiver Titus Young.

Young, who has tremendous potential to go along with a growing list of disciplinary issues, went on a Twitter rant last week about the Lions supposedly threatening to cut him. According to The Detroit News, Owens recently said Young needs to fall in line with Detroit.

“He has to understand that Calvin (Johnson is) the No. 1 receiver,” T.O. said, “and being the No. 2 receiver, you have to go with the flow of the offense and when your time comes, make the plays.”

At this point, Young would be lucky if he was considered the team’s No. 4 receiver. Owens also said Young needs to “know his role.” Speaking of knowing your role, the 39-year-old Owens is hoping to play in the NFL again next season.

“I look good,” he said. “I feel good.”

T.O. may have never head-butted an opponent or intentionally run the wrong route during his NFL career, but his inability to keep quiet and do his job has led to turmoil throughout his 15-plus seasons as a pro. If Young ever wants to establish himself as a staple in the Lions offense or elsewhere, the time to start showing a little maturity is now.
