Cristiano Ronaldo scores goal to help US advance (Video)

Ghana-goalCristiano Ronaldo was one of the heroes for the United States on Thursday afternoon. Wait, doesn’t he play for Portugal? Yes, but Ronaldo’s first goal of the 2014 World Cup punched Team USA’s ticket to the knockout stage of the tournament.

The US was trailing Germany 1-0 at the time Ronaldo scored to give Portugal a 2-1 lead. Had Ghana defeated Portugal with the US losing to Germany, there is a chance Ghana could have won the goal differential tie-breaker with the US and advanced. Instead, Portugal — with it’s -3 goal differential — essentially put Jurgen Klinsmann’s team through.

As you can see, Ronaldo’s goal was pretty much a gift from Ghana goalkeeper Fatawu Dauda. Ghana had already given up an own goal earlier in the match, so Ronaldo’s strike capped off a rough day for them.

Cristiano Ronaldo has another new haircut

Cristiano-Ronaldo-haircut

Cristiano Ronaldo debuted a new haircut before Portugal’s match against the United States last Sunday, which may or may not have been a tribute to a young boy’s scar that resulted from brain surgery. Before Thursday’s match against Ghana, Ronaldo was sporting a new look.

The zig-zag line was no longer visible as Ronaldo went with a more close-cropped look. Remember, kids — how you look is just as important as how you play.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I never thought we could win World Cup

Cristiano-Ronaldo-Phil-ScolariCristiano Ronaldo hardly looked excited on Sunday night after his perfect cross in the 95th minute resulted in a stunning draw between Portugal and the United States. After Germany blew them out 4-0 in the opening game of group play, Portugal needed a win against the US. The draw broke the hearts of Americans, but it didn’t seem to excite Ronaldo.

Why? Maybe Ronaldo doesn’t think his team is good enough to make a deep run in the World Cup even if they somehow advance to the knockout rounds.

“Maybe we’re an average team,” he said after Sunday’s game. “It would be a lie to say that we are a ‘top’ team. We have many limitations and suffer from injuries such as with Pepe [who was suspended] and [Fabio] Coentrao. This limits us a lot. We have a very limited team and we are not at the best level. This does not enable you to beat top teams.

“There are no miracles. We knew we would have a tough group, with perhaps teams better than us. I never thought we could be world champions, we have to be humble and know our level. I’m not a hypocrite, I never thought we could win the tournament.”

Portugal were missing four players against the US due to injuries and suspensions. One of them was a top defender in Pepe, who was given a red card against Germany for an idiotic headbutt. And while Ronaldo has been able to play, he too has been battling a knee injury that has clearly slowed him down.

“I don’t want to justify myself by talking about my physical problems, that’s water under the bridge,” he said. “I’m here, I’m fighting, I’m trying to do my best, I’m running, and obviously it’s no use talking about my issues.”

Many experts picked Portugal to advance to the semifinals of the tournament, mostly because of Ronaldo’s unmatched skill and scoring ability. However, the 29-year-old insists his team has never been a favorite.

“I don’t think we lost [sic] the game because our players lacked attitude,” Ronaldo added. “Every team comes here to win. We knew we weren’t favourites, we have never been.”

Portugal needs to beat Ghana and get some help in the US-Germany game to advance. With the way Ghana was looked and the way Ronaldo is talking, we wouldn’t be surprised if Portugal exited the 2014 World Cup without a win.

The United States were 25 seconds away from advancing to the knockout rounds with an improbable win over Portugal on Sunday. Then Cristiano Ronaldo happened.

The US battled back to take a 2-1 lead over Portugal after falling behind 1-0 early. All Michael Bradley had to do was possess the ball at midfield to burn off the time remaining in the five stoppage minutes, but he gave the ball up and allowed Portugal to counter. Here’s what Bradley was dealing with:

After Bradley gave it up, Ronaldo was able to make a perfect cross that was headed in by Varela. The US still have plenty of scenarios where they can advance (you can see them all here), but the way the game ended was as heartbreaking as it gets.

Cristiano Ronaldo girlfriend is Irina Shayk; stalker is Andressa Urach

Irina-Shayk

With the United States taking on Portugal in a crucial World Cup match on Sunday evening, we wanted to make sure there was no confusion over who is dating the really good looking dude on the Portuguese team. Naturally, we’re talking about Cristiano Ronaldo. As many of you know, his girlfriend is Russian supermodel Irina Shayk.

Shayk has appeared in Sports Illustrated’s Swimsuit Issue since 2007. She was the cover model for the magazine in 2011. Shayk and Ronaldo supposedly met through their Armani Exchange campaigns and have been dating since 2010. Here she is cozying up to a wax statue of her man.

Miss Irina is not to be confused with Andressa Urach. The latter, another model, was kicked out of Portugal’s practice on Wednesday even though she had a media credential. The reason? Urach has supposedly demonstrated stalker-like behavior toward Ronaldo. Here’s a photo of Urach, courtesy of her Instagram page.

Brazilian model Andressa Urach kicked out of Portugal’s practice

E aí, CR7? Andressa Urach é expulsa de treino… by LANCETV

A Brazilian model and former “Miss Bumbum” runner-up was kicked out of Portugal’s soccer practice Wednesday even though she had a media credential. The issue is that this woman, Andressa Urach, has demonstrated stalker-like tendencies towards Portugal star player Cristiano Ronaldo.

Urach went to Portugal’s team hotel last week after the team arrived in Brazil last week for the World Cup. She showed up with her torso painted in Ronald’s Portugal jersey.

Wednesday she went to Moisés Lucarelli Stadium in Campinas for the team’s practice and was kicked out by Portugal’s soccer federation. She complained about being forcibly removed by security despite having a press credential.

“I came to say good luck to the C7 and got kicked out of the field, took my press pass, as if I’d blame everything! I came to the field to # # muitoshow RedeTV because my “Director” sent!! Lol just laughing even cade freedom of expression,” she wrote on Instagram (as translated by Google).

Apart from Wednesday and last week’s chest-painting, Urach has even more of a history with Ronaldo.

Last year she claimed she slept with Ronaldo a few days before his Real Madrid squad lost a Champions League game. Ronaldo denied the claim and said he was doing an interview that night.

Though there could be worse things in life than having a Brazilian rump model following you around, we can understand why Ronaldo, who is dealing with a leg injury, wouldn’t want the distraction.

Some distraction, though, right?

Germany coach Joachim Loew wipes nose, shakes Cristiano Ronaldo’s hand (GIF)

Joachim-LoewGermany coach Joachim Loew shook Cristiano Ronaldo’s hand as the Portugal star left the field on Monday, and he may have given him a souvenir in the process. I guess that just depends on how clean Loew’s nose is.

As you can see, Loew wiped his nose area right before displaying good sportsmanship with Ronaldo. While there’s a 99.9% chance it was unintentional, it was still a pretty funny coincidence.

Like the rest of his team, Ronaldo did not play particularly well. Germany dominated Portugal from the starting whistle in what was one of the most lopsided games of the World Cup thus far. Pepe was given a red card for his childish antics and will be out for Portugal’s next game against the US. Overall, it was a very bad day for Ronaldo and company.
