Yankees manager dismisses Luis Severino pregame warm-ups issue

Luis Severino

Aaron Boone brushed aside Luis Severino’s tight warm-ups schedule before Game 3 when speaking with the media after the game.

The New York Yankees were smashed 16-1 by the Boston Red Sox in Game 3 of the ALDS on Monday night for their worst postseason loss in team history, one that included an extremely embarrassing ending. Severino was knocked out of the game after loading the bases in the fourth and was charged with six runs over three-plus innings.

TBS said during the game that Severino got a late start for his pregame warm-ups and only began warming up eight minutes before the game.

Boone was asked about Severino’s warm-ups twice during his postgame press conference. He did not refute TBS’ information, but he did say that Severino got enough of his warm-ups in.

“He got his normal pitches, routine … faced a couple of hitters down there. So no, no issue with that,” Boone said in response to a question about the warm-ups.

The Yankees manager was then pressed about the issue a second time in his press conference and was asked whether TBS’ information about Severino beginning his warm-ups was incorrect.

“I’m not saying … I’m saying he had plenty of warm-up. He had what he intended to go down there and get done. [Yankees pitching coach Larry Rothschild] said he was able to get through his normal routine where he faces a couple of hitters, so it wasn’t an issue.”

Severino similarly dismissed the matter after the game.

Was this much ado about nothing from TBS? The perception will now be that Severino got a late start on his warm-ups to the point that he was on a tight schedule before a significant playoff game. Either way, he did not have good results in the game, which continues to be a theme for him in the postseason.
