Dodgers add former phenom to coaching staff

The Los Angeles Dodgers are adding a notable name to their coaching staff: former Chicago Cubs phenom Mark Prior.

Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports reported on Tuesday that the Dodgers are hiring Prior to be their bullpen coach. News of the hire was confirmed by multiple sources, including Dodgers beat writer Andy McCullough of the LA Times.

Prior, now 37, pitched for the Chicago Cubs for five seasons from 2002 to 2006 and had a very up-and-down career — he made an All-Star team and was an NL Cy Young finalist in 2003 before being derailed by injuries. Prior formally retired from pitching in 2012 and had been working as a minor-league pitching coordinator for the San Diego Padres for the last three years.

With one of the league’s best relief corps at his disposal, Prior should make for a fine hire as he attempts to help the Dodgers live up to some lofty promises.
