The difference between No. 2 and No. 5 in the NL West could not possibly be any greater.
The San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies met on Saturday at Coors Field in Denver, Colo. for the middle game of their weekend series. But what was supposed to be a baseball game quickly devolved into a brutal schoolyard beatdown.
San Diego ended up scoring five runs in the first inning, one run in the second, one run in the third, a whopping eight runs in the fourth, four runs in the fifth, and one more run in the sixth. For all of those keeping score at home (or on the ESPN app), that was 20 (!!!) total runs scored by the Padres through just the first six innings of the game.
The offensive explosion could not simply be written off as a product of hitter-friendly Coors Field either. That is because the Rockies offense (on the flip side) was completely missing in action on Saturday. Through those same six innings, Colorado was held scoreless on just four hits (creating a slapstick score of 20-0 in favor of San Diego).
Here were some of the best reactions on social media to the clobbering that took place on the diamond.
The Padres scored their 20 runs (through six) on a ridiculous 22 hits (plus four walks). Fernando Tatis Jr, Xander Bogaerts, Gavin Sheets, Jason Heyward, and Jake Cronenworth all homered for San Diego, and poor Rockies starter Bradley Blalock was charged with a farcical 12 earned runs in his 3.2 innings of work.
Making matters (somehow) even more embarrassing for the Rockies was that they already got shelled by the Padres offense on Friday night, losing by a 13-9 final score. But it turns out that was a mere appetizer for the (soon-to-be) 6-33 Rockies, who should probably be spared from even having to show up for Sunday’s series finale. After all, it has become abundantly clear that Colorado’s hitting, pitching, and even their defense are all a complete joke.
