BaseballHouston Astros cheating scandalKen Giles

Ex-Astros pitcher Ken Giles offers to return World Series ring

It seems increasingly unlikely that Major League Baseball will take further action against the Houston Astros, but one member of the 2017 title-winning team is willing to play his part in stripping the team of the championship.

Ken Giles, a reliever on the 2017 team, said he would return his World Series ring if asked in light of the team’s cheating scandal.

“It just hurts,” Giles said, via Rosie DiManno of The Star. “If they want it back, I’ll be true to whatever needs to be done.

“Whatever they ask, I would oblige. Because what was going on at the time was not OK.”

Giles said he was unaware of the Astros’ trash can banging scheme because he spent the bulk of games in the bullpen, not the dugout.

Some players do want the Astros stripped of their championship. That appears unlikely as this point, as much of the furor among players has died down publicly now that spring training games have gotten started. Giles, now with the Toronto Blue Jays, is the first former Astro to openly admit that it might be worthy of consideration, which is no small thing.
