Luke Scott says slump has brought him to tears and made him pray for help

Luke Scott is currently setting all the wrong records for the Tampa Bay Rays. On Thursday night, he set a Rays team record for most consecutive at-bats without a hit as his historical hitting slump continued with an 0-for-3 night. Scott is currently in an 0-for-39 funk. The Rays record was 0-for-37 and the MLB record is 0-for-46, held by utility man Eugenio Velez. As expected, Scott is not a happy man.

“I have sleepless nights, lots of sleepless nights,” Scott said according to the Tampa Bay Times. “It’s brought me to tears, it really has. It’s something that really weighs heavily on my heart every single day. Every single day I wake up, I have this burden on my heart and I have this heaviness. I get on my knees every single day and I pray, I ask the good Lord to help me, to help me come through this. That’s where my trust is.

“Does it weigh heavy on my heart? Oh my gosh. I’d say if I wasn’t a Christian man, I’d be an alcoholic or something – this is something that would have driven me to drink.”

That sounds to me like a religious man who has lost some perspective. First of all, it’s hard to feel bad for someone who is so incredibly outspoken and unafraid of insulting people. More importantly, isn’t he being a little dramatic? I understand Scott wants to help his team and do his job as a professional, but with all that’s going on in the world and all the people who need help I don’t see how somebody can call a hitting slump a “burden” that they pray daily for the Lord to help them with.

Does it suck? Of course. But this is baseball. Saying a horrendous slump could drive you to drink and causes you to cry and beg God for help seems more than a little over the top.
