Yankees’ Miguel Andujar to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery

Miguel Andujar

Miguel Andujar has decided to undergo season-ending shoulder surgery, the New York Yankees announced on Wednesday.

Andujar was placed on the injured list on April 1 with a shoulder injury that was suffered on a dive back into the bag to avoid being picked off. He suffered a small labrum tear at the time, and there was an acknowledgement that season-ending surgery would be a possibility.

Andujar tried to rehab the injury and returned to action this month, though he went 3-for-24 since being activated off the injured list. The team placed him back on the IL on May 13.

After not showing any improvement, and with more rehab being his other course of action, the 24-year-old third baseman decided to undergo surgery.

Andujar ends the season having hit .128 with one walk, 11 strikeouts, and no extra-base hits in 47 at-bats. This comes a year after he batted .297 with 27 home runs and finished second in AL Rookie of the Year voting. Gio Urshela has played so well over the past month that Andujar’s loss might not be felt negatively this season.
