Bradley Beal not expected to accept max extension offer from Wizards?

Bradley Beal

Bradley Beal has only a few more weeks to decide whether or not he wants to accept the three-year, $111 million max contract extension he has been offered from the Washington Wizards, and it sounds like he is comfortable playing another season under his current deal rather than taking the financial security.

Beal is leaning toward not signing the extension, a source told NBA Central. The two-time All-Star would prefer to see how the season unfolds in Washington before committing to the team for another three years.

Beal is set to make just over $27 million this upcoming season, and his current contract doesn’t expire until 2021. However, the Wizards will almost certainly offer him an extension again next summer if he chooses not to accept the one that is currently on the table.

There are a lot of questions surrounding the Wizards with John Wall expected to miss the entire 2019-20 season as he recovers from a torn Achilles. There has been speculation that they could start rebuilding by trading Beal if he won’t accept the extension, but all indications are that they have not made the 26-year-old available.

Beal averaged career highs virtually across the board last season with 25.6 points, 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. He seems to be getting better each year, and he could become eligible for a supermax contract if he makes an All-NBA team next season. Signing the $111 million extension might be tempting, but he has plenty of reasons to gamble on himself.
