The Los Angeles Lakers are ready to see out the rest of the decade with JJ Redick at the helm.
Redick, the Lakers head coach, recently got a new contract extension from the team. Lakers general manager Rob Pelinka made that announcement during a press conference earlier this week.
On Friday, Shams Charania of ESPN revealed the details about Redick’s new extension during an appearance on “NBA Today.” The Lakers are extending Redick for two years, taking him through the 2029-30 season. Redick’s total contract value is for $45 million, Charania adds.
Redick, 41, got hired by the Lakers last summer and was originally given a four-year, $32 million contract. That means Redick initially had three years and roughly $24 million left on the deal. But the new extension tacks on two more years (for a total of five years) and gives Redick a pay bump from $8 million per year to around $9 million.
During Redick’s rookie season as head coach, the Lakers won 50 games but suffered a disappointing loss in the first round to the lower-seeded Minnesota Timberwolves. Redick also drew criticism down the stretch of the season for some supposedly immature moves.
That said, the Lakers have apparently seen enough out of Redick to convince them that he is their guy for the next half-decade. Interestingly enough too, Redick’s extension runs even longer than that of new Lakers franchise player Luka Doncic, who got a fresh big-money deal of his own from the team earlier this offseason.
