Klay Thompson wants to play for Warriors his entire career

Klay Thompson

Klay Thompson has every intention of being a Golden State Warriors lifer.

Speaking with the media on Thursday, the All-Star guard was asked about his 2019 free agency and whether he would like to remain with the Warriors.

“Absolutely,” replied Thompson, per Mark Medina of The Mercury News. “I’ve always said that. Playing for one team your whole career is definitely special. Only so many guys have done it in professional sports, so it’ll be a goal of mine. Hopefully it all works out.

“It’s so far away,” the 28-year-old added about his forthcoming foray into free agency. “Anything I can do to stay with the Warriors is first and foremost. God willing, it happens. If not, I don’t even think about that.”

Thompson has been with the Warriors since being drafted by them No. 11 overall in 2011. His desire to remain with them for his entire career makes sense from a self-interest standpoint as well — as one of four All-Stars on the team, there is minimal pressure on Thompson with maximum opportunity to compete for NBA titles (beyond the two that he has already won with them).

Granted, maintaining their current core of Thompson, Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, and Draymond Green could prove highly costly for the Warriors over the next several years. But on Thompson’s end, he seems determined to prove wrong this fellow star who recently predicted a departure from Golden State.
