Police make decision on Josh Giddey underage relationship investigation
Josh Giddey is in the clear from a criminal standpoint.
Police in Newport Beach, Calif. told TMZ Sports on Wednesday that they will not be filing any charges against the Oklahoma City Thunder guard Giddey for his alleged relationship with a minor girl. Officials found no corroborating evidence against Giddey, and as a result, the Newport PD investigation, which began in November, is now officially closed.
Online allegations (which you can read about in full here) surfaced against the 21-year-old Giddey nearly two months ago, prompting the investigation. But we learned that the alleged minor victim and her family were refusing to cooperate with the investigation, possibly playing a role in why officials were unable to find any evidence to support the filing of charges against Giddey.
The former No. 6 overall pick Giddey has not missed a game for the Thunder throughout the entire scandal (though he has regularly gotten booed on the road by opposing fans). Giddey is now up to 11.8 points, 6.1 rebounds, and 4.6 assists per game this season as OKC sits at 27-13 (second in the West).
It is still possible that Giddey could face a civil suit as the alleged minor and her family did recently hire a very well-known lawyer. But Giddey managing to dodge any criminal charges is great news for both him and the Thunder.
