Buzz Williams reportedly leaving Marquette for Virginia Tech
Buzz Williams had his first down season at Marquette since taking over for Tom Crean, and now he is headed elsewhere.
According to multiple reports, Williams is leaving Marquette to become the head coach at Virginia Tech. Jeff Goodman reports that the deal is for 7 years.
Though Marquette was only 17-15 this season, Williams took the Golden Eagles to the Elite Eight last season and the Sweet Sixteen the two previous seasons. He was 139-65 in six seasons at Marquette.
James Johnson, who replaced Seth Greenberg at Virginia Tech, went 22-41 the past two seasons as head coach of the Hokies.
Goodman says Ben Howland, Mike Hopkins and Brian Wardle are names to look out for at Marquette. CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish also reports that Howland is expected to be in the mix for the Marquette gig.
