North Carolina head coach Mack Brown has reportedly made a decision about his future in coaching.
Brown has been telling those around him that he intends to remain the head coach at UNC beyond the current season, according to Matt Zenitz of 247Sports. The 73-year-old has shared that message with his staff, players and on the recruiting trail.
UNC would also have to want Brown back, of course. Brown is under contract through 2027, but the school has yet to make any public statements about his future.
Brown sparked speculation earlier this season that he might retire. The former national champion reportedly told players after UNC’s 70-50 loss to James Madison that he was willing to walk away if that would be best for the team.
Though he did not deny making the comments, Brown later said he had no intention of retiring in the middle of the season and had been trying to hold himself accountable for an embarrassing loss.
The loss to James Madison was the start of a four-game losing streak for UNC, but the Tar Heels have since turned things around. They have wins over Virginia, Florida State and Wake Forest in their last three games. Brown’s team is now 6-4 with games remaining against Boston College and rival NC State.
Brown is in the sixth season of his second stint at UNC. He has taken the Tar Heels to bowl games each year, though they have lost the last four.
