Report: PJ Fleck not getting traction as Oregon candidate

PJ Fleck

Many thought that PJ Fleck would be a perfect fit at Oregon after the Ducks fired Mark Helfrich, but apparently he is not getting much traction as a candidate for the job.

The Oregonian’s John Canzano reports that Fleck has yet to interview for the job. He says Fleck is unlikely to do so until Monday at the earliest, if he interviews for the position at all.

Fleck, 36, has Western Michigan 13-0 this season — an impressive turnaround from the team’s 1-11 record in his first season. He has been on the job for four seasons and has the Broncos consistently reeling in top recruits.

Fleck is known for his energy and pizzazz, which resonates well with recruits and helps build interest in the program. His on-field product is now matching the off-field buzz he generates.

Canzano speculates that Fleck’s youth and shtick, such as his “row the boat” motto, are things Oregon may not yet be ready to bring in, especially after a young coach like Helfrich just flopped.

South Florida’s Willie Taggart and Boise State’s Bryan Harsin reportedly have already interviewed for the job. Ohio State’s Greg Schiano reportedly is also considered a candidate for the gig.
