Brock Osweiler played Cam Newton on Broncos’ scout team

Brock Osweiler

Brock Osweiler may be on the bench as the backup quarterback for the Denver Broncos in the Super Bowl, but that does not mean he is not a valuable member of the team.

Osweiler actually spent part of the week leading up to the big game trying to mimic Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton on the scout team.

During the week, Osweiler talked with the media about playing the role of Newton in practice.

“It’s certainly different than what we do. But the scout team is obviously something that, I don’t want to say you enjoy because you want to be the starter, but it’s always something I’ve always tried to make the most of,” Osweiler told reporters, including our friends at Black Sports Online. “It’s something special that your team needs. Your team needs that great look.

“I know our scout team in Denver, we take a lot of pride in what we do throughout the week. And we want to give our defense a great look. But somebody like Cam is hard to simulate. You do your very best to do it, but he’s an extremely special football player and it’s very hard.”

That’s the problem. You can try all you want to simulate Newton, but it’s just very difficult to do. He’s 6-foot-6 and 260 pounds with a cannon for an arm and an incredible ability to run. Guys with that profile are extraordinarily rare, which is why he’s a number 1 draft pick, Heisman Trophy winner, and now NFL MVP. The one thing Osweiler does have is similar height at 6-foot-8, but beyond that, good luck being able to look like Cam Newton.
