Rumors continue to swirl that Baker Mayfield is not guaranteed the Cleveland Browns’ starting quarterback job in 2022. The Browns, apparently, have told Mayfield differently.
The Browns met with Mayfield’s representatives at the NFL Combine and assured them that the plan was to start Mayfield in 2022, according to Mary Kay Cabot of cleveland.com. The Browns also added that they do not intend to pursue a veteran who could supplant Mayfield as the starter.
Various reports during the offseason have indicated that the Browns were looking at veterans, and Mayfield’s future was not secure if they found another option they liked. The organization may have assessed the market and found nothing they were interested in.
Mayfield is heading into the final season of his rookie contract. He threw 17 touchdowns and 13 interceptions in 2021, but the organization will be hoping improved health will help him rebound in 2022.
