A 66-year-old Pro Football Hall of Famer is trying to make the first Team USA Olympic flag football squad in 2028.
Legendary defensive back Darrell Green is taking part in national team trials this weekend to try to make the Olympic team. The USA football program confirmed that Green took part in a digital combine and earned the right to take part.
“Darrell qualified through our digital combine. He’s later in his career than the other trials participants, but his testing results were impressive,” said Callie Brownson, the senior director of high performance and national teams for USA football, via Pat Graham of the Associated Press. “Our coaches and staff felt he deserved a closer look. … He’s a rare athlete who has stayed in shape and is ready to compete this week.”
In a video posted to Instagram, Green said he was going to “give it my best” and “walk away with my head up either way.”
Flag football will make its debut as an Olympic sport at the Las Vegas Olympics in 2028, and NFL players will be allowed to take part. Several have made it clear they would love to participate, so needless to say, the bar for Green to make the team will be very high.
Green spent his entire 20-year NFL career with Washington, where he was known as a lockdown cornerback. He was selected a first-team All-Pro in 1991 and won two Super Bowls during his career.
