Matthew Stafford agreed to a restructured contract with the Los Angeles Rams last month, and some new details about the agreement have emerged.

Stafford signed a new deal with the Rams in March after being given permission to speak with other teams. The 37-year-old was set to make $23 million in 2025 with very little guaranteed money prior to being given a raise.

That raise was substantial. On Monday, Ian Rapoport of NFL Media reported that Stafford will earn $44 million this upcoming season. The Rams have already paid the former Pro Bowl quarterback $4 million, and Stafford has another $40 million guaranteed owed to him.

Stafford will lock in another $40 million guaranteed if he remains on L.A.’s roster at the start of free agency next year.

If Mathew Stafford is on the #Rams roster next at the start of FA, he’ll lock in another $40M. Stafford was on the books for $58M over 2 years, now it's $84M over 2 years.

There were reports that Stafford turned down significantly more money from at least two other teams in order to remain with the Rams. It now sounds like the gap between L.A. and those teams was closer than initially believed, however.

Stafford completed 65.8 percent of his passes for 3,762 yards and 20 touchdowns last season. The Rams won the NFC West and beat the Minnesota Vikings in the Wild Card round of the playoffs.

A salary of around $44 million places Stafford in the middle of the pack for an NFL starting quarterback, which is probably appropriate for him at this point in his career. While he has had injury concerns in recent years, he is one of the tougher players in the league and has been extremely dependable.

The new contract proves that Rams head coach Sean McVay still believes the team can contend for a Super Bowl with Stafford.
