Los Angeles Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh quite literally wakes up in the middle of the night thinking about his players.

In an appearance on “The Rich Eisen Show” Friday, Harbaugh casually stated that he recently woke up with a start and thought about the need to ensure that quarterback Justin Herbert eventually makes the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This doesn’t appear to be entirely unusual for him, either.

“Woke up the other day, I said, ‘I’ve got to get Justin Herbert to the Hall of Fame. Let’s get Justin Herbert to the Hall of Fame,’” Harbaugh said. “It’s just one of those things where you wake up at 3:30, 4 in the morning, and sometimes that’s when your best ideas come. That would mean winning a couple Super Bowls. A lot of people would benefit from that. That’s a worthy goal.”

Harbaugh made the comment in the context of discussing the Chargers’ NFL Draft haul. The team went heavy on offensive weapons, taking a running back, two wide receivers, and a tight end for Herbert to benefit from.

Harbaugh really loves Herbert, and he has made that clear in the past. Identifying the quarterback as a potential Hall of Fame candidate might come with a bit of pressure, but clearly, the coach thinks Herbert can handle it.

Herbert just wrapped up his fifth NFL season. He threw for 3,870 yards with 23 touchdowns and 3 interceptions, but he still has yet to win a playoff game. Harbaugh is right that championships might be a necessity for Herbert to achieve the goal set out for him, though the quarterback is off to a good start to his career statistically.
