Roy Williams Has Faith in Jon Kitna Who Is ‘Just as Good’ as Tony Romo

Roy Williams may have been a bust most of the time he’s been a Dallas Cowboy, but the one area he’s always had success is in making hyperbolic statements. There was this during the off-season, and there was his guarantee in 2006 that the Lions would beat the Bears week two, just for a taste of his confidence. Detroit by the way went 3-13 that year and lost the game 34-7.

With Tony Romo’s broken clavicle injury likely knocking the quarterback out for the year, Jon Kitna will step in and become the team’s starting QB. If Monday night was any indication, it’s going to be a loss-laden season for Dallas and hard times for the offense.

That’s not how Roy sees it.

After the loss, the receiver maintained a positive attitude and expressed confidence in Kitna saying “Tony Romo is our starter but Jon Kitna is just as good. We are going to work this week in practice so we get the timing down with the receivers. But I have complete faith in him. I know how good he is.”

While some people will run and say Williams was smack-talking Tony Romo, that’s not the case.

In the same conversation, Roy also said the Cowboys would still go 11-5 despite being 1-5. Williams is an optimist maintaining confidence as he should. His best (and only Pro Bowl season) came in 2006 with Kitna as his quarterback in Detroit, so there’s nothing wrong with believing in the backup. I say this was much more of Williams expressing confidence in Jon and speaking in hyperbole than a knock on Romo. Don’t get it confused.
