Tony Romo reportedly retiring to pursue career in broadcasting

Tony Romo

Neither the Denver Broncos nor the Houston Texans will be landing Tony Romo this offseason, as the veteran quarterback has decided to end his playing career.

ESPN’s Adam Schefter and Todd Archer reported on Tuesday that Romo will retire from football to pursue a career in broadcasting.

The Cowboys on Monday granted teams permission to talk with Romo, and they were apparently planning to release the 36-year-old this week. Sources told ESPN that his decision ultimately came down to health, as Romo has undergone multiple back surgeries.

One NFL executive is not yet convinced that Romo is truly retired.

“Romo is now every team’s emergency backup QB in case your starter gets hurt,” the exec told ESPN, noting that teams would have to “pay him to come out of retirement.”

Should Romo decide to get into broadcasting immediately, he reportedly has an excellent job offer waiting for him.
