A source close to the Western University program has informed LBS that prized freshman point guard Butch McRae intends to transfer. Sources have indicated that the highly-touted recruit does not feel comfortable in Coach Pete Bell’s offense, and that is the main reason he plans to leave the program. Additionally, McRae, who is from Chicago, is said to be homesick.
McRae was a big piece of the three incoming freshmen that made Western’s recruiting class the best in the country. Along with center Neon Boudeaux and Ricky Roe, McRae has the undefeated Dolphins poised for a top seed in the NCAA tournament coming off their upset win over Indiana Saturday.
Despite the team’s early success, McRae still plans to move to another program. One potential snag in his effort to leave the West Coast is his concern regarding the status of his mother who started a new job and moved into a new house during his recruitment period. Rumors have swirled that these were recruitment gifts from the “friends of the program,” and McRae is worried they may be taken away should he transfer.
The good news for Dolphins fans is that McRae will be around to continue the excellent season Western is having.
