Michael Jordan has reportedly been been banned from the upscale La Gorce Country Club in Miami Beach, and the NBA legend says that is just fine with him. Earlier this week, Jordan reportedly angered course officials by not following the dress code and wearing cargo shorts during a round of golf. On Thursday, Jordan explained his side of the story in a text to ESPNChicago.com.
“I’ve been there many times and no one told me a thing,” he wrote. “Then all of a sudden they come to me on the 11th hole and say I can’t wear cargo shorts. Wow! The round is almost over and you want me to buy shorts now? Yeah, right!!”
Jordan reportedly refused to change and proceeded to finish his round. When informed that a NY Post source said he will not be invited back to the club because of the incident, M.J. hardly seemed fazed.
“No problem!!” he wrote back.
According to a pro shop worker, the required attire at La Gorce Country Club is a collared shirt and golf shorts (Bermuda shorts) or pants. Like most other high-end courses, players are not allowed to wear jeans or shorts and pants with pockets on the outside.
Rules are rules, but I can see both sides of the argument. On one hand, why should M.J. receive special treatment when there is a clear dress code that everyone has to follow? On the other hand, if he really has worn cargo shorts before and never had a problem you can see why he’s upset that they all of a sudden wanted him to change his clothes in the middle of a round. It’s hard to strip someone of special treatment once you’ve given it to them.
