Referees screw Clemson before halftime by not stopping clock

Dabo Swinney was livid with the referees in the National Championship Game on Monday night after they failed to stop the clock following a Clemson first down prior to halftime.

Clemson had a 2nd-and-8 from the Alabama 37-yard line with 20 seconds left in the half. Deshaun Watson completed a pass for a first down to the 27. The clock should have stopped with 12 seconds left, but it kept rolling and went all the way down to six before it stopped.

Clemson was forced to take a timeout instead of spiking the ball to stop the clock.

Had the officials not screwed up, Clemson would have been able to run another play to get the ball closer for a field goal, and they could have used their last timeout to stop the clock following that play. Instead, they had to attempt their field goal rather than risk running out of time. They ended up having their 44-yard field goal blocked, and the score remained 14-14 at halftime.
