DC mayor wants Redskins name change discussed

washington redskins logoThe Washington Redskins are the home team for the nation’s political center, yet they still have one of the most politically incorrect nicknames in professional sports.

Currently, the team plays its home games in Landover, Md., and its headquarters are in Ashburn, Va. If the team is to consider a move back into DC’s city limits, the mayor of DC, Vincent C. Gray, wants a nickname change to be discussed.

“I think that if they get serious with the team coming back to Washington, there’s no doubt there’s going to have to be a discussion about that,” Mayor Gray said after a news conference, “and of course the team is going to have to work with us around that issue.”

According to the Washington Post, Gray noted that the Washington Bullets (now the Wizards) and many other teams changed their insensitive or politically incorrect names.

“I think it has become a lightning rod, and I would be love to be able to sit down with the team … and see if a change should be made,” he said. “There’s a precedent for this, and I think there needs to be a dispassionate discussion about this, and do the right thing.”

Many fans and political figures in DC are passionate about the Redskins, and we know from past discussions that there would be plenty of resistance to a name change. We know that the current owner, Dan Snyder, has opposed a name change, so such a process would not be easy.

Ironically, the team which represents our nation’s capitol is the most politically incorrect of all.

They were called redskins because when they played in Boston the name was given to honor the Boston Tea party when american patriots tossed British tea into the Boston harbor   history anyone????

‘Political correctness is a doctrine, fostered by a delusional, illogical minority, and rapidly promoted by mainstream media, which holds forth the proposition that it is entirely possible to pick up a piece of sheit by the clean end.

Seriously, and you idiots are for this to happen? What will be next? I know, let’s se how far we can drive the PC car until everyone becomes PC automatons. Net thing that will happen, everyone will be required to have their names changed to a more PC name. IF the team agrees to do this, then they deserve everything they get coming to them. Change the Redskin nickname, please.

  • Mtdallas1

Paint a redskin potato on each side of their helmets. Problem solved!

Yes, because this is the real issue that should be discussed.  This is the real problem and embarrassment to the city of Washington D.C.  Get a grip, it’s a team name.  Anyone who is that offended by it, is free to not support to the team.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/BUDSSANGHXMC6ZON7MS3V3SNYE Peter

Who cares Gene.  It’s a team name.  Just about anything is going to offend somebody somewhere.  Enought with the over the top political correctness.

i am 1/2 native, seneca, the birth place of america’s 3 branches of government. as such REDSKINS is very offensive to me and my brethren. how would it play out if teams used names as the ny hebes? cleveland kikes? la spics? san fran  gay boys? boston niggers? the uproar would be infinitely dealt with, but the native’s offense goes un changed. i am not and never will be a fan and supporter of a team that offends me such as REDSKIN does. all you naysayers get an effen clue. do not speak of support, all it does is keep racist views alive. we as a people are coming out of the dark, ugly racist upbringings of our parents and that is great!! don’t ignore this issue, don’t suppress it.  MR. SNYDER show compassion and understanding….CHARLES TERRITO

i lost my original post on this subject, so i will try again .

i am a native(our name).1/2 seneca. we are the tribe(iroquois confederacy) that original american government used as a prototype for our governing body, the 3 branches. before the govt was formed geo. washinton admired our  form of govt. so much he installed a copy for our new born nation, still in place today. we have been called savages(offensive) to us,(REDSKINS)offensive to us. america is showing great progress is getting rid of racism, american people are changing for the better. natives and all races are changing their attitude on racism for the better and i applaud that.we keep getting more enlightened as time passes,BUT to accept the besmirching of our race is abhorrent, disrespectful and racist. for those of you who don’t or can’t understand this, all i can feel is sadness for you. please wake up and accept the change that is going on.sure racism probably won’t ever completely disappear, but that does not do any good for all of us.MR. SNYDER, you have a chance even before the move to the capitol of truth, justice and the american way to do this change. i agree with  the mayor of washington,d.c., change the name. now this posting was honest, truthful and informative, so please all who read this, do not approach this with negativity, bad words, etc. just think of this: ny niggers(?), detroit micks(?), la fags(?). how would that go? would any of you out there accept that, of course not, so why should we. our tradition as a nation does not and should not allow this issue any credibility! all those opposed to our request need to change their collective, antiquated mind speak, get with the times. thank you for reading. i submit my name as apoint of courage, i publicly stand up to my words not like the anonymous(!!0 cowards that post…..CHARLES TERRITO.

The only people keeping racism alive are the ones who keep bringing it up jsut because they feel offended. When in all reality if they actually took the time to look into, research, “get their head out of their butt” they would find out differently! I have seen so many schools change their names due to this obsurdity of “Racism” it makes me sick! Every institution that has/had given their team name an indian “ish” name has done so, not out of Racism, but out of honor! How could one possibly think that a bunch of elementary kids, or high school kids could/would do harm to such a name. Wthey all took HONOR in being a part of THAT team.  different in Pro ball. I along with a few of my friends dreamed of growing up to be on the REDSKINS team. Not because we thgouht it was funny or rude, but inturn, It would have been a HONOR to play for that team.

How about the Washington Passion Flowers. That doesn’t offend anyone, have any relation to violence nor have any negative connotations.  Because God forbid we hurt anyone’s feelings.   In fact, I think we should stop having the Superbowl and we should just hand out trophies to everyone…everyone should be a winner.  He isn’t being paid to worry about a fottball team…run your damn city!
Man up and Grow some balls America!

I don’t think you would feel that way if you were native american.  I think a name like Florida State Seminoles is fine and it comes with the support of the Seminole Nation, but Redskins would be likened to calling your team the Negroes.  Sorry, that goes over the line.

If that’s their history of the franchise, then I agree it’s OK to retain.  Otherwise, it is simply racist, unlike the Fighting Sioux, Seminoles, Braves, etc.

FYI The team originated as the Boston BRAVES, based in Boston, Massachusetts, in 1932. At the time the team played in Braves Field, the home field of the Boston Braves baseball team. The following year the club moved to Fenway Park, home of the Boston Red Sox, whereupon owners changed the team’s name to the Boston Redskins.

Thank you. Interesting piece of history and how unfortunate for them to choose that name. However, others think the name came from William Dietz. And for that history …
Dietz was a boarding school survivor. There were government boarding schools and religious boarding schools designed to remove First Nation culture. Carlisle, for whom the school Dietz attended was named, petitioned and had Congress pass the “One Hundred Years Solution to the Indian Problem” act. Carlisle’s motto, “Remove the Red Man, Leave the Man”, was considered benevolent in that era. In a combined government/NGO effort tribes were divvied up amongst the Christian religions (other religions were not allowed by the law). Government and NGOs burned down houses of worship, removed children from their homes and transported them long distances to ensure they would not learn culture or language from their parents, grandparents and other family adults. This process was to be repeated with each generation for a 100 years until the culture was wiped out. The beatings, molestations and death occurring in these institutions are well documented. Some say the model for this act came from the English treatment of the Irish. The additional burning of communal homes comes from Jefferson’s policies and not this act. Jefferson encouraged actions (many illegal) to create debt in First Nation individuals and communities. Then the only form of resolution for this debt would be the forced sale of their land. While the colloquial term Red Man is a reference to race, redskins is not. Redskins refers to the amount of blood on “Indian” victims of massacres (many of these massacres in the Delaware, New York, Maryland area). Given the number of descendants of Boarding School Survivors (some schools remaining in existence until the 1970s) it is not surprising that they may not know American (their) history and so don’t have a negative opinion on the derogatory name. It’s possible somebody could think the name is to honor and remember the dead.

As a long time Redskin fan since the 2nd grade
about 1969 and seeing over 150 Redskin games and one Super Bowl, the
newest Mayor is outta of his mind. He is just another seat warmer in
the mayors office waiting to go down in flames and handcuffs…..

Does Gray understand or not that he has absolutely no control over the Redskins and their name….  PC or not he has no control over the Redskins and nobody wants to play inside the District.

I don’t see Daniel ever wanting to go pick up all the footballs and
jerseys and move back and play football inside the District of Columbia.
Our Redskins are moving training camp from Redskins Park out past
Dulles to Richmond.   Let’s see,the games in Maryland, and practice in
Virginia. The Redskins want nothing to do with the City….

Barnee Breeskin died a few years ago so he isn’t going to be changing
the music or the words to “Hail to the Redskins”. The name is going to
stay the same, the Redskins will still play their home games in
Maryland and they will practice in Virginia…. They city just can’t do
anything right and this is another crazy idea.

Well they do represent Washington  DC

Peter, I am not a guy who preaches “political correctness”.  I disliked almost all of the name changes based on political correctness.  However, this one is purely a slur and has no place in our sports society.  Braves, Indians, Chiefs, Warriors, etc. are fine with me.

  • dumitdown

Fine, I’ll give you a history lesson.  First of all you are right, the name was given to honor patriots who took part in the Boston Tea Party.  However, the guys who took part were white men dressed as native americans, which in itself is offensive becasue the reason for dressing up as they did, was to try to deflect blame toward native americans.  With your logic, it would be like honoring white union soldiers during the Civil War for dressing up like african americans, sabotaging a confederate stronghold, and naming the Atlanta professionsl football franchise the “black faces”!
