I think the Cowboys have always been popular but they were more of a case of a sleeping giant when they were bad. Now that they’ve become good, the monstrous fanbase has awakened.

The Dallas Cowboys are popular on television for the same reason as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox; ESPN.

Every little thing that happens to them becomes a big story. The Cowboys are ESPN’s winter team. A minor “TO” incident becomes a national story,
just as a Derek Jeter hangnail.

The real question is whether the TV popularity of the above teams preceded ESPN’s coverage, or resulted from same coverage.
