Missy Franklin got her Olympic rings tattoo (Picture)

Missy Franklin said before the Games that she was planning to get an Olympics tattoo, and she went through with her plans. The 17-year-old swimmer got a small tattoo of the Olympic rings around her right hip and shared a picture of it on her Twitter account Thursday.

Franklin had the approval of her parents and says this will be her only tattoo.

“Getting a tattoo has never been something ever thought I would do, but this one just has so much meaning to it and it is really something that you have to earn,” Franklin told TODAY.com. “Not a lot of people have the opportunity to get it, so I just feel like it’s an honor to get it.”

“This will be the only one, and she’s earned it,” Dick Franklin told TODAY.com while in London.

We’ll see if this is her only one — lots of people say they’re addictive. Maybe she’ll end up adding to it if she participates in future Olympics the way Stephanie Rice did.

it won’t affect mine… Obama is a failed socialist president … he must go… even if he were running against daffy duck… he must go before he destroys America as we know it… just like he has destroyed medicare as we know we know!!!

I wish you actually understood what a socialist is.  By the very definition, Obama is not a socialist.  I guess if you can’t say out loud that you’re racist, the next best thing is to pretend you’re Joe McCarthy and blame it on socialism.  Which just makes you look not only racist, but stupid.

Dont people have better things to do then judge others by a small tatoo of how proud she is to make to the olympics ,and maybe we should be more concerned with our own decisions not a 17 year old and her proud tatoo, if thats the worst she does her parents should be vey proud of her.You go girl it looks geat..

  • dogboy75

    Go Missy,

The rings are an honor and you deserve them.  You can touch them up on the next few Olympics that you compete in.  Good job in London and can’t wait to see you in Brazil.

    That is so disappointing,,

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/IL3SH2FBN3AK7EOQPTJSUZUYQ4 robert

That is so disappointing especially for one that projected as a role model

  • http://www.facebook.com/terry.mortensen.1 Terry Mortensen

Why is getting a small tattoo of the Olympic rings projected as being a bad role model? Just because someone has a tattoo doesn’t make them a bad role model, nor is it disappointing. She was in the Olympics, and this is a way they show this huge acheivement. I don’t think it’s a disappointment nor a bad choice to make.

You have to “earn” this tattoo?  I don’t believe there is a law on the books saying you aren’t allowed to get an Olympic rings tattoo unless you compete or win…..I’m pretty sure that is what the gold medal is for–to show that you won….and winning being the only method of procurement….

  • laxgirl125

I think it looks beautiful.  It is small, tasteful and will be covered most of the time.  I think she deserves this if this is the way she want to celebrate her success. She had the full blessing of her parents in this as well.

  • val55

I loved seeing the Olympic Ring tattoos on various athletes during the games. It’s nice seeing them honor these traditional games that way. ( Why does the yellow ring always seem to fade, though?)

You go girl they those medals can be stolen that tattoo is yours until you decide to get rid of it. They even hating on that so sad. Make it to that level see what you do to show off your success.

I’m not for tatoos, but the Olympic rings on a winner really does look nice.  At least it is not an obnoxious tatoo and this one won’t hurt her chances of being a well dressed young lady should she ever need to go on a job interview.  Missy, good job, and thank you for representing USA!

  • tmag13

At least she has a good reason to get a tattoo.  It’s not my thing, but soooo many kids have had them for so long and so many are so gross.  This one is truly meaningful and she had good reasons for wanting this one.  At seventeen she had a very reasonable conversation (or several) with her parents for why she wanted something that some very judgemental people would not.  She certainly has proven herself to be a very responsible young woman capable of handling herself.  She is not a role model , she is a famous athelete.

So the teens who spread their flaps and got knocked up, those into drugs & booze, those who dropped outta school….those are not disappointments, but an Honors Student & Olympian who got a tat is one?  What the fk is wrong with you all?

  • http://pulse.yahoo.com/_SHDYEYXFWTAENTMZZNEZKWDYZQ Jenny

You must be projecting some of failures that you have yet to come to terms with.

I agree with everything you said Terry. She is a great role model and a beautiful young lady, and on top of that she is a Olympic athlete. I beleave jug head has a small problem with himself.

Most of you will never win so much as an Employee of the Week award, let alone an Olympic gold medal, and you’re begrudging her this cute tattoo?

  • swimmom10

Why does it matter if person A, B or C, etc.,  agree with Missy’s decision to get a tattoo?  The only person that needs to be happy with the decision, is Missy.   That tattoo has no effect on anybody, except for Missy.  On another note, Missy is not a “role model” to anyone.  She is an athlete that has accomplished great things.  It is wonderful that in addition, she seems to be a very down to earth, happy and kind high school senior.   Calling her a role model, does nothing but set the stage for disaster.

tattoos have been around for centuries. give it a rest all you judgmental hypocrites. find something else to attack. or better yet, find a worthwhile cause to actually get off your ass and make a diffrence.

  • mikehjohnson

    I’d let her do me

  • Carlos Lopez

he changed it after I posted, which is a good thing. At least he admitted he was wrong. It said something like, “in Olympic circles, the rings are the equivalent of a tramp stamp”, now it says: “maybe she”ll end up adding to it if…..”
