OK, so Week 1 didn’t exactly start off with a solid showing. I went 1-2, with an embarrassing loss by the Rams as one of my picks. They only needed about 12 more touchdowns to beat the spread. The Saints won a close one and barely covered — about what I expected. And the Vikings played exactly how I expected them to play against the Packers, they just got burned on the punt return for TD that made it a two score game, and came up short against the spread. Anyway, Doc Brown’s Sports Almanac Picks are sponsored by the online sportsbook BetUs.com which has you covered for all your football betting needs.

On with the picks.

Jets -1.5 vs. Patriots – This is a pretty simple pick for me: Brett Favre is a good quarterback, Matt Cassel is not. For this particular game, forget the name on the front of the jersey for the team wearing blue, gray, and red, and just look at them as the team starting Matt Cassel as their quarterback. He’s not very good, and he’ll be even worse when the Jets have a full week to prepare for him. It’s their division for the taking now.

Chargers -1 at Denver – I don’t think the Broncos are as good as the Raiders made them look, though I could be wrong. I also believe that the Chargers barely got beat by a solid Panthers team or they would have otherwise been favored in this one. Winning at Mile High isn’t easy, but San Diego has made it appear that way the last two years. I think they make it three.

Browns +6
vs. Steelers – Both teams were on opposite ends of lopsided games last weekend. The Steelers romped the Texans, ramming it down their throats. The Browns were thrashed by the Cowboys — my pick for the Super Bowl. Don’t get caught up too much in their blowouts and get the wrong idea that the Steelers are that dominant or that the Browns are that bad. Don’t expect Braylon to suffer from the dropsies this week, and expect the Browns to put up many more points on the board.

Just for the record, I like Pittsburgh big against the Browns.

Is that because you think Pittsburgh’s that good, Cleveland’s that bad, or a combination of the two?

A combination of the two, but mostly that Pittsburgh appears to have its act together early in the season and Cleveland does not.
