Barry Bonds to have street named after him in San Francisco

The city of San Francisco is in the process of redeveloping the area that was once known as Candlestick Park, and that includes naming streets after legends who called the venue home. Barry Bonds, of course, is one of the most well-known.

ESPN.com reports that Bonds and fellow former San Francisco Giants players Willie Mays, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda will all have streets named in their honor. Willie McCovey, who hit 231 career home runs at Candlestick Park and gave “McCovey Cove” its name, will have a park in the new development named after him.

Candlestick Park was shared by the Giants and San Francisco 49ers for decades, and NFL legends are also being immortalized with the new plans. Joe Montana already received a sign for a street that will be named in his honor, and the Hall of Fame quarterback requested that the name be changed to “Montana-Clark Drive” as an homage to former 49ers wide receiver Dwight Clark.

Bonds is perhaps the most interesting recipient of the honor, as his MLB career was infamously scrutinized because of his association with performance-enhancing drugs. The former slugger’s 762 career home runs are still the most in MLB history, however, and Bonds has tried to own up to his mistakes in recent months.
