It is Big Dumper’s world, and we are all just living in it.
Seattle Mariners catcher Cal Raleigh etched his name into the history books on Wednesday with a majestic two-homer performance against the Colorado Rockies at T-Mobile Park in Seattle, Wash. Raleigh teed off on Rockies starter Tanner Gordon in the first inning for his 59th home run of the season and then he tagged Angel Chivilli in the eighth inning for [chef’s kiss] No. 60.

Raleigh’s big night, which also helped the Mariners officially clinch the AL West division title with a 9-2 victory, had everybody talking on social media. In particular, users all expressed awe at the sight of a catcher hitting 60 home runs in a single season.

A Gold Glover last season and an All-Star this season, Raleigh already obliterated both the single-season record for home runs by a catcher (previously held by Salvador Perez with 48 in 2021) and the single-season record for home runs by a switch hitter (previously held by Mickey Mantle with 54 in 1961). Now he has become just the seventh player in MLB history with 60 homers in a single season (after Babe Ruth, Roger Maris, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Barry Bonds, and Aaron Judge).
Raleigh and the Mariners still have four games left in the regular season as well, and it looks like Judge’s AL record of 62 (set in 2022) might be in some real danger. For the time being however, Raleigh continues to provide both the vibes (including with his profane message after Seattle officially clinched a playoff spot this week) and the dingers as part of the single greatest season for a catcher in MLB history.
