Cody Bellinger cracked a funny joked after the Los Angeles Dodgers clinched the NL West on Friday.
The Dodgers beat the rival San Francisco Giants 4-2 to improve to 98-56 on the season. Though their record is incredibly impressive, the Dodgers took much longer than expected to clinch because of serious struggles from late August to mid-September that included an 11-game losing streak.
Bellinger made light of that after clinching.
“Yeah, we were sucking just so we could clinch at home,” Bellinger joked in an interview with Spectrum SportsNet.
“We said it a hundred times — no one was really ever worried. We knew the kind of talent that we had.”
The game was won thanks in large part to Bellinger’s bat. He clubbed a 3-run home run in the third to give him an NL rookie record 39 homers on the season. Best of all, the homer happened at home to please the fans. The Dodgers shouldn’t stop now as they need to continue winning in order to gain homefield advantage throughout the playoffs.
