It did not take long for a Houston Astros shakeup to emerge following the team’s ALCS Game 7 defeat.
Dusty Baker is expected to step down from his role as the Astros’ manager, according to a report. Baker has “expressed to multiple people” that 2023 will be his last season managing the Astros, according to Brittany Ghiroli and Chandler Rome of The Athletic.
The report states that the looming decision does not mean Baker is retiring. The report indicates that Baker wants to “remain in the game in some capacity.” Baker’s wife also believes that her husband is not necessarily retiring as a manager.
Baker reportedly held off from making a public announcement to avoid drawing attention to himself in his final year with the team. The decision to leave also remains fluid as Baker could potentially still change his mind.
The 74-year-old veteran has spent 26 seasons managing in the MLB. Baker has led his teams to a World Series three times, with his first championship coming with the Astros last season.
There was uncertainty surrounding Baker’s return last offseason following Houston’s World Series win. He ended up signing an extension for one more season — his fourth and possibly final one as Astros manager.
